Potassium
High potassium: no symptoms, but it can affect your heartbeat
High potassium usually has no symptoms — by the time you feel it, it is often very high. 5 things every kidney patient should know.
- 1Potassium leaves the body through the kidneys. As kidney function falls it builds up; very high levels disturb heart rhythm, can be fatal, and often cause no symptoms.
- 2Common high-potassium sources: banana, kiwi, orange juice, potato, tomato, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, concentrated juices.
- 3"Salt substitutes" and "low-sodium" soy sauce usually replace sodium with potassium chloride — a hidden high-potassium source for kidney patients.
- 4Cutting vegetables and root crops small, soaking and boiling in plenty of water, then discarding the water removes part of the potassium; soups, stews and hot-pot broth keep it in the liquid.
- 5There is no one-size-fits-all potassium limit — guidelines say adjust to your blood level. Some kidney-protective medicines raise potassium; do not stop them yourself, ask your doctor to adjust.
If "K" is high on your report, ask your doctor first: is it diet, medication or constipation? Don't guess, and don't stop medicines on your own.

| s | Pantalla | Locución |
|---|---|---|
| 0–5 | Lab report: K 5.8 in red | This K on your report is high — and you may feel nothing at all. |
| 5–15 | ECG waveform peaking | Potassium leaves through the kidneys. When they weaken it builds up, and too much disturbs heart rhythm — fatal in severe cases, and usually silent. |
| 15–26 | Line-up of high-potassium foods | Common sources: banana, kiwi, orange juice, potato, tomato, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate. |
| 26–35 | Zoom on label: potassium chloride | One many people miss: salt substitutes and low-sodium soy sauce swap sodium for potassium chloride — high potassium for kidney patients. |
| 35–46 | Chop → soak → boil → pour water away | Chop vegetables small, soak, boil in plenty of water and discard it — that removes part of the potassium. Soups and hot-pot broth do the opposite: they keep it. |
| 46–54 | Pill bag + "do not stop on your own" | There is no single potassium limit — it depends on your blood test. Some kidney-protective drugs raise potassium; don't stop them yourself, let your doctor adjust. |
| 54–60 | Site logo + URL + QR | Want the potassium in any food? Beyond CKD has a 346-food lookup table and a diet calculator. |
