People on maintenance dialysis worldwide (2024)
0people
There is no single global registry; this is an estimate, not a count: the ISN-GKHA 2023 figure (~3.95 million) plus published 2023→2024 registry increases (China +110k, Brazil +15k, US +3k, Japan −6k) gives ≈4.1 million. If dialysis were universally accessible the true need could be 2–4× higher. Country figures below are raw registry counts.

Cause colours
Diabetes is yellow — the leading cause in most of the world; hypertension / nephrosclerosis light orange; polycystic kidney deep orange; chronic glomerulonephritis warm red; lupus nephritis rose; grey is other / unknown. Note that China and Russia still list glomerulonephritis first, unlike the diabetes- and hypertension-led West.
Sources and limits
Counts are from the latest public reports of national registries (TWRDS, JSDT, USRDS, CNRDS, ERA, ANZDATA, UKRR, CIHI, MDTR, SRR…; last verified 2026-10-14, updated to JSDT 2024, USRDS 2025 ADR, ERA 2023, UKRR 27th, MDTR 31st, SBN 2024, CNRDS 2024); cause shares are primary diagnoses of incident patients and classifications differ slightly by country (e.g. Japan codes hypertension as "nephrosclerosis"). Countries without mandatory registries (India, Nigeria…) are estimates and far below true need. Figures update with each annual report.
